  1. One who enjoys the freedom of a borough.
  2. Since the early Middle Ages, a freeman has
  3. been allowed to carry out his craft or trade
  4. within the jurisdiction of the borough and to
  5. participate in municipal government, but
  6. since the development of modern local
  7. government, such privileges have become
  8. largely honorary. There have generally been
  9. four ways of becoming a freeman: by
  10. apprenticeship to an existing freeman; by
  11. patrimony, or being the son of a freeman; by
  12. redemption, that is, buying the privilege;
  13. or, by gift from the borough, the usual
  14. method today, when the privilege is granted
  15. in recognition of some achievement,
  16. benefaction, or special status on the part of
  17. the recipient.
